PGY1 Residency Program Overview

Ascension St. Vincent’s Birmingham is a 409-bed faith-based non-profit tertiary care center in Birmingham, AL. The PGY1 Pharmacy Residency at is a post-graduate program consisting of 12 months of general training and experience in an acute care setting. Its goals, objectives, and evaluation procedures are established to be consistent with the accreditation standards of ASHP.

The Ascension St. Vincent’s Birmingham PGY1 Pharmacy Residency Program builds on Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) education and outcomes to contribute to the development of clinical pharmacists responsible for medication-related care of patients with a wide range of conditions, eligible for board certification, and eligible for postgraduate year two (PGY2) pharmacy residency training.

The St. Vincent’s PGY1 Pharmacy Residency Program prepares well-trained clinical generalists with extensive practice experiences in a large community-based acute care hospital. Residents will be well prepared to continue their training in a specialty PGY2 program, or transition into a clinically oriented hospital practice role.

Application Qualifications

  • Residency applicants must be eligible for employment in the United States.
  • Possess a Doctor of Pharmacy degree from an ACPE-accredited college or school of pharmacy at the time the residency begins.
  • Be eligible for licensure as a pharmacist in the State of Alabama. 
  • St. Vincent’s Residency Program participates in the ASHP Resident Matching Program.
  • Applications must be submitted through the Pharmacy Online Residency Centralized Application Service (PhORCAS) by the designated deadline, typically the first day of January each year. 
  • We require three references and a letter of intent which may be submitted through PhORCAS (separate letters are optional)
